T-shirt Design Contest: Arts, Culture & Design

We’re excited to announce an invitation to design a commemorative t-shirt for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair 50th Anniversary (April 21st – October 21st, 2012). Whether you’ve just started drawing or make a living at design, we want to see your design ideas for our shirt. You could win great prizes, including studio time at GAGE Academy of Design and The Vera Project, or tickets to local museums like SAM and EMP.

The theme for the design is The Next Fifty Years: Arts, Culture & Design. Seattle has one of the best art scenes in the nation, hands down; from the varied selection of theater, dance and music to the many examples of visual art, performance art and the nation’s largest film festival. For years Seattle Center has been integral to the city’s art scenes by housing many of their parent organizations, as well as boasting some of the region’s most innovative and inspiring architecture. Keep this in mind while designing the winning t-shirt.

Enter

No more than three designs per person, please.

Seattle Center is gearing up for the 50th Anniversary of the World’s Fair in 2012: The Next Fifty celebration!
The collectible glasses feature the Space Needle, Pacific Science Center, Coliseum/KeyArena, Seattle Center Monorail, International Fountain, and Center House. The zombie glasses (the name of their style) recall the original design with additional elements to celebrate The Next Fifty in 2012, and are quickly becoming collectibles themselves. Glasses can also be purchased online at www.thenextfifty.org or in our World’s Fair Gallery at the Center House, Seattle Center.

I was 11 years old when the fair opened. My father was covering the Fair for the UPI and had a press pass and received lots of ticket books, for free. My next door neighbor and I would hop on the bus and go to the fair at least twice a week. We had free entry, free rides, discounted food, Monorail passes and even an occasional Space Needle ticket. It was heaven on earth that summer. I’ll never forget the crowds of people and wonderful exhibits; also the Orange Julius’s and the Belgium waffles. Yummy! It is hard to believe it had been 50 years.

The community is invited to design the Mascot for the Seattle World’s Fair 50th Anniversary. The “character” design will include a drawing and story (1000 words or less) including the Mascot’s name and a creative description of how the mascot reflects the theme of The Next Fifty. The character should be delightful and inspiring; forward thinking, representing the future; and must contain no background, be a full body character, and should be 8.5″ X 11″ size.

Here’s how it will work:

1) Designs should be submitted online by 11:59 PM PST September 20, 2010.

2) Throughout the contest the community will submit votes online to help select a “Community Favorite” from all designs entered into the contest.

3) After September 20, a panel of judges will review all submissions and select one winner from each of the following categories:

Children (ages 5-12)

Youth (Ages 12-18)

Adults (18+)

Grand Prize Winner

4) The winners for each category including the Community Favorite, along with the Grand Prize winner, will be announced after September 21, 2010.

The Grand Prize Winner’s design will be designated as the Official Mascot of The Next Fifty celebration. Execution of the winning design will depend on the entries submitted. The design may be used in print and digital media, branded merchandise or a costume may be created from the selected drawing. Get creative! Have fun. We look forward to seeing your ideas.
