50 years of architecture

April 30, 2010  |  Arts, Culture & Design, Brainstorm

Seattle has grown significantly since the worlds fair. Also has the architectural design culture making the pacific northwest haven for design professionals. All around Seattle are architectural gems worthy of national and international attention. I propose an exhibit of architectural models, drawings, images, and videos of Seattle architecture highlighting such great firms as LMN Architects, Miller Hull, and Olsen Sundberg Kundig Allen. This exhibit could be supported by the Seattle Architecture Foundation, DOCOMOMO-WEWA, Space.City, AIA Seattle and other non-profit foundations.

Personal Aircraft

April 29, 2010  |  Brainstorm, Science and Technology

Tired of the brutal traffic on I-5 and HWY 520? Seattle’s geography makes it an ideal city for the implementation of a personal aircraft transportation system. Gliders, kites, and balloons will fill the skies. Small electric planes and helicopters will replace cars and commuter buses, eliminating traffic woes and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Outdoor Classrooms

April 29, 2010  |  Brainstorm, Learning

In Calcutta, India, university students take classes seated on lawns and walking through forests. I’ve seen it done at the University of Washington and I believe it’s the wave of the future. Seattle has some of the most beautiful public green spaces of any major city. Our elementary, high school, and higher education students will be using these places as their classrooms.

April 29, 2010  |  Arts, Culture & Design, Brainstorm

Many cities around the world have tried it, and it works: legal graffiti walls keep street art legal and youth out of jail.

Youth Engagement

April 26, 2010  |  Brainstorm, Civic Action

It would be great to see more youth engagement around civic and local government matters. Perhaps an update of the Century 21 plan with more input from our future leaders?
